Karen and I have been remodeling our house and doing a lot of traveling on our off time since summer started, so things have been a little…well NUTS!
We’ve been making it a top priority to focus on our motivation tactics to help keep our body fat levels low for the summer.
You see, it’s not genetics or a secret fat burning pill that makes us fat burners…it’s consistency. How do you stay consistent? One word: MOTIVATION.
We know for a FACT, that motivation is one of THE secrets of the fat burning journey.
So we got to thinking: “Do our subscribers and followers actually know how to use our unusual motivation tricks to stay on course like we do?”
We use a few very unique methods to stay motivated for exercise AND eating during the summer when we always want to party down and eat bad food.
We use things like music, pictures, reward systems, strategic cheating, and even a strategic diet and exercise plan (we call it “The Ultimate Summer Fat Loss Cycle”) that we’ll share with you in the next couple days. This is some VERY sneaky stuff. ?
What about you? What strategies do you use to stay motivated for fat loss and exercise during summer?
We’ll be sharing this new and innovative summer fat loss plan in the next 7 days, but we need to know how you motivate yourself for exercise and fat burning nutrition first.
Half of getting the body you want is knowing exactly what makes you tick and keeps you going day after day.
Next, you MUST write it down (or type it) so your brain can take action on your commitment. Do this right NOW by leaving a comment below and let’s help each other across the fat burning finish line!
We’ll talk to you in the comments section below!
Shaun and Karen
P.S. Type out below what your TOP 2 or 3 motivation strategies are. We guarantee you’ll be 50% more likely to immediately follow through with your commitment because you typed it below. Research and study after study show this works EVERY time, for EVERY person who puts their strategies in writing.

Responses toHow Do YOU Stay Motivated For Fat Loss?
I find that I have two very important factors I need to keep in check: consistent sleep pattern and consistent exercise pattern. And the two work together.
When I get to bed early enough that I can get *up* early enough to exercise *before* I start my day, all my eating habits seem to naturally follow the program, because it just comes from habit now. By starting the day with some form of exercise, I get centered and focused and my concentration is solid and my creativity is ignited for the entire day. And, since that helps me keep my diet and nutrition right, it also means that my metabolism is right, and contributes directly back to having strong energy stores to draw from.
So, my first strategy is to keep in mind all the immediate benefits of keeping the routine right.
My second strategy is having a workout partner. Someone who has at least reasonably-similar goals, and whose schedule can mesh with mine enough that we can spend time at the gym together, or play sports together, or whatever it takes to help keep the routine consistent. If it’s hitting the gym together first thing in the morning, it helps that one of us picks the other up at home on the way there, which gives us both even more reason to get moving early enough in the morning, etc.
A third strategy I use is just as simple as re-watching your videos and motivational materials. I’ve even got some of them on my iPod and I listen to them while I’m doing other things — even if my mind is really focused on another task, there are always little ideas that I pick up from things you say, and those tips or reminders or remembering-of-benefits, they all add up to helping keep me motivated towards my goals.
Of course the bathroom scale and mirror are also motivators too, especially when they’re reporting positive results!
And my girlfriend is a great motivator too. I love it when she tells me how great I look! It makes all the hard work worthwhile!
That is my number one problem—motivation! There are certain triggers that will test my motivation and I suppose that I should write those triggers down and then find ways to avoid those situations.
I think the Ultimate SummerFat Loss Cycle would be a good motivator! Does that count!
I think the main way I stay motivated is by being a geriatric Physical Therapist I see many patients that are not living the life I believe God has called them to live because they have not kept their temple up. So, everytime I’m too tired to exercise, or bored with it, I ask myself. Do I want to do all I can do to keep my body ready to do what God wants me to do? This motivates me more than new clothes or looking good.
1.exercise early . This is when I am most motivated. When I exercise first thing I have twice the energy the rest of the day.
2. Look in the closet often. In order to stay in my summer outfits I need to stay focused on the plan.
3. I look in the mirror and remind myself of where I was with my weight this time last year and visualize where I will be this time next year.
As of this morning I am down 30 pounds! That in itself is motivating. To be able to wear clothes 3 sizes smaller then when I started. I also allow myself now to have an off meal or an off day depending on what is going on around me. I couldn’t do that until I was down about 15 pounds. Before that it was to easy to slip. BUt after that first 15, I knew there was no turning back, no going back to the bigger fatter yuck that I had become. I still have a lot left to lose, but it doesn’t seem like such an unsurmountable challenge any longer.
I have decided at age 77 I want to live an active Healthy Life Style until 100 or more. That is much different than live to be 100.
My Knees are my motivator along with keeping up with my active husband.
My knees were hurting me. After minor surgery on them my surgeon said take off some weight or I will be a candidate for knee replacement and get a recombunt bike and exercise every day for at least 30 minutes. I have lost 40 pounds, I get complements that I look to be in my 60′s and I can keep up with my healthy active husband who eats right, exercises and is tall and thin and very healthy and good looking. He says make up your mind once and do it. Then you don’t have to keep deciding.
I have gone from size 14 to size 8 to 10. HCG is part of the secret. My husband who is a health nut supports me, helps me and introduced me to HCG. Thanks to get lean in 12 for encouragment also.
avoiding family diabetes is always there to get it right, though I am not doing very well at all in the last two weeks. but, i must get over it, so i can get back to my good health.
Motivator 1: I want to be fit and fabulous when I turn 50 this year, not fat and frumpy!
Motivator 2: I want to be active and healthy so that when I have grandchildren in the next few years I will be able to enjoy them and play with them, not just watch them play.
Motivator 3: I want to look good so that I feel good about myself.
Now, if I could just figure out how to get my brain to cooperate with my body…
I keep myself around positive people. I surround myself with people who have the same goals as I do when it comes to fitness and we use each other to pump each other up and give pep talks if needed or just to do things together. Whether it be a bike ride, a workout or visit a totally different gym then what we go to. Share recipes, new workouts, or maybe do a group challenge….like, let’s see who can go such and such meals without cheating. Always realistic goals. Start with one day at a time…..
Motivators -
1) Pay a personal trainer and go to a gym with LOTS of mirrors.
2) Plan a vacation where I know I will need to be in a bathing suit or sexy dress.
3) Plan an event – triathlon or half marathon – that keeps me training.
4) Talking with like minded girlfriends.
5) Good sex.
The biggest motivators for me are #1 – Weighing myself every morning after my GL-12 workout and #2 trying on my clothes that I wore before having 3 children 7 years ago. I am so close to wearing them I can taste it!!! Thanks, Shaun for your awesome workout!!! I would really like to wear these clothes in 3 weeks, I wonder if it is possible???? Any help would be appreciated!!
One of the motivational tools that I use more than any others is using the internet to keep focused–that includes reading success stories and other people’s struggles, keeping up with medical studies to make informed choices for food and suppliments and fingind tasty recipes.
The other motivational tool I use is a 20 year old pair of pants. I haven’t been able to fit in them for <> a while, so I am looking forward to reading your motivational strategies!
What keeps me motivated is a picture of myself weighing 50 lbs more. I still have 40 lbs to go but already I feel so much better. At 63 I was seeing some health numbers starting to take a bad turn and decided it was way past time to make the needed changes. My numbers are so much better and as I loose more weight I should be able to get off the one medication I have been on. Saving money is always a motivator. All I have to do is look around at other people my age and older for me to see the reasons for me to stay motivated and on track.
The smaller amount of fabric in the summer helps me to stay motivated. I still have 40 pounds to lose, but exercise is easier for me in the summer. Unfortunately, diet is harder for me at this time of year. I actually forget to eat and then I am starved and eat more in the end. It is a horrible cycle and I hope you can help me break free of it
Thanks for all you do,
Kim
My motivation is you guys ! I have been a fan of Wendy’s books & Shaun’s enthusiasm for some time now. I have lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks and have kept it off for 5 weeks. I have shared your tips & website with several people because it’s the ONLY fat-loss system/ healthy eating program/ 12 minute workout, I will ever do. I am a lifer ! No going back for me baby…I hope to lose atleast 7-10 more lbs but not sure if my budget can afford a new wardrobe LOL. Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels. thank-you guys for a system that actually works.
I make sure to do my exercises first thing in the morning and a couple times a week I do another workout after work. Saturday cheat day is wonderful although I try not to go overboard. My number one motivator is having a partner to talk to. We started this journey together and we have both lost 40 pounds since November. Since we are both teachers we’re seriously nervous about the summer months. We are diet partners, not friends, so we don’t see each other during vacation. It’s a bit scary to go into the summer without my partner to hold my hand.
I have a dress hanging outside of my closet that I see every time I’m in my bedroom. I wore that dress to my daughter’s wedding. I am going to wear it again at Christmas when we will all be together. My motivation is seeing the numbers on the scale go down. I love knowing I am going to have to buy new jeans before long…Even the belt I use to keep them up is too long!
I love the thoughts Karen ruminates on. I’m packing some of those in my thought tank too. Thanks Karen. So many of you have great motivators. For me, I have to agree with Beverly on two counts. 1. I am edging past middle age and I have seen the devastation of weight and poor eating habits have on people as they age. I, like Beverly, want to be agile in mind and body as I age. To be one of those people that younger people say to, “I want to look like you when I get to be 70!” would be a great thing. For that, I don’t need face lifts, I need body strengthening and dietary discipline. 2. I have a husband who is dedicated to exercise and light eating. So, like Beverly,he is a big motivator for me as well. Finally 3) God motivates me. There are things God has called on me to do, and for that I need to be healthy and strong. Also, I believe that a lifetime, no matter the length, is a gift, and I need to treat it as such.
I am going to be honest and tell you that staying motivated is a huge struggle. I do all of the above ( I have read thrrough all of the posts) yet I can fall down the rabbit hole and land in never never land. HELP!!!!!!
i was obese as a child and from the age of 16 i have been training myself since, the motovation came because i have missed out on soo much, why throw away the rest
Seeing people and having them tell me how great I look 30 lbs makes a big difference… 30 lbs more to go I can only guess how good that will feel. I exercise first thing in the am that seems to keep me going though the day. I watch Shaun’s training & motivation videos over and over and it keeps me consistent! Thanks for the help and motivation!!! 52 lbs down 30lbs to go! Keep me strong!!
I pray everyday that God will help me stay motivated and also I have friends at work that are also trying to live more healthy and we encourage each other. I also use self-talk to reinforce myself. I have lost 50 lbs. and that also helps me to stay motivated to loose the next 40. Thanks for all your emails, they are also benefical.
My main motivation comes from wanting to be HEALTHY & maintain a nice APPEARANCE.
I have found that as I’m fast approaching 40, these things do not come as easy as they did in my younger years AND I’m having to work twice as hard at staying fit. So with my motivation in mind, it helps me stay focused to eat right, exercise daily and get plenty of rest, at least 8 hours. If you care about yourself your frame of mind will follow and make your goal a lot easier to stay fit for LIFE!!!
First nothing motivates quite like reality. The first thing I do each morning is step on my scales that weigh to a tenth of a pound. Now I have my marching orders. Second I keep a picture on the fridge of a beautiful body in a swimsuit with the words, nothing tastes as good as thin feels. Every time I’m tempted to indulge, I look at the picture and read the words. And lastly, I wear my skinny jeans regularly.
First things first. Wendy’s book Breaking the Fat Loss Code and your info on your website is the best I have ever found for losing weight and keeping it off. Am I at a perfect weight? Not yet but I am healthier and slimer than I have been in over ten years.
At least four days a week I hit the treadmill on a empty stomach at 5 AM and don’t eat breakfast for an hour. I vary my time and speed on the treadmill.
I try to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night.
I am carb conscious.
When I am too small for my clothes, I either alter them or give them away.
My goal pants are haning in the closet for me to see.
I try not to think too much about what I am doing!
Whether it’s eating food that I don’t want to eat or working out for a certain amount of time, I try to block it all out mentally while I’m doing it. That means, covering up the time on the treadmill/bike with a towel.. Putting my music on and just zoning out.
If I have to eat food that I don’t want to really eat, I eat it anyways but I put my mind on something else.
I stay busy mowing grass with a push mower all summer. At least three days a week I mow for at least 2 hours. I am going on a vacation in September and I want all new clothes to take with me. Smaller ones.
Wow Beverly!!! Your words are a great motivator!!!
I struggle with motivation. I found this site my accident, signed up for newsletters and really haven’t read many till yesterday. Thank you Shawn and Karen!
You could say my main motivation is just doing things like walking and visiting the zoo day. It hurts so bad to walk. I am about 150 lbs overweight once again in my life. I am almost 53. Yo-yo’d all my life. Bought a recumbent bike and have cut out fast food almost completely. Recently tried kettle balls and love that! Just have to consistently learn to stick to it…
So that’s what i need…a stick-to-it-ness plan in myself!!!
I stay motivated by keeping my mind on my goals. so, first thing each day I plan my life around my goal which is to stay fit. If I know that on any given day there are going to be life’s obstacles i make sur that my goals are met first & foremost around those obstacles. It is almost like a game to see if life will win or I will prevail. It keeps me motivated.
I think my biggest motivator is simply that Wendy’s plan really works for me. I’ve lost 60 pounds since Nov 09 and still have about 40 to go, but seeing what I’ve already accomplished is a big motivator. Wearing clothes I haven’t been able to get into for 10 years is great, too. My exercise buddies, a border collie and a cocker spaniel, help a lot. When I go near the door in the morning they beat me there, rarin’ to go for a jog. Knowing I can “cheat” and still stay on track helps a bunch , especially if I am really craving something – I love fruit and baked goods. I love to bake but have limited it to times when my kids are home and I have scheduled some cheat time. Then I can send all the tempting foods home with them. Works for me.
Every evening I get out my pad of paper and a pen and make a plan for the next day. At the top of the page I write “Do” “Go” “Call”. Then list below all the things I have to do. At the bottome of the page I write which meal day I will have, like carb up, etc. Then plan the food. Exercise is always a must so I plan the minutes on my treadmill eaither a full 30 minutes if time or I break it up into 3 10 min. sessions if I have a busy start to the day. Same for weight traning. As long as I keep a plan, I am successfull.
I LOVE summer. I am lucky enough to have a swimming pool in my back yard and it is my gym, my stress reliever and my total enjoyment in the summer. I do a water aerobics when I first get in until I am completely worn out and then lounge on the float. I will do this at least 2 or 3 times during my swim.
My 2nd motivator are 2 pictures of myself in my early 20′s. I KNOW I can make it back there again. Have lost 23 pounds in the last 2 months – that’s also a great motivator.
Getting started was the key. Decided the day I read an article about Wendy’s diet – went to the bookstore, sat and read the whole book, bought it and another – I’m 54, started Dec 8 and am now 58 lbs lighter. Daily motivator is the scale, only owning clothes that fit me now and loving the way that I look and feel. I try to plan my week around when I can/can’t exercise and what I have planned socially. Working on about 10 lbs more, but have become less obsessed with every little carb and have relaxed things just a bit, so losing slowly but figuring out how to maintain this for the long haul. BTW: Still devastated by Wendy’s death…how sad.
At 52 I have struggled with Menopausal weight gain and refused to be overweight because I didn’t like how I felt or looked. When I look in the Mirror I want to see a body that looks fit and lean. I know it sounds vain but looking good matters very much to me. At the weight I am now (20# lighter) I feel my body is in great shape for age 52. This program has helped me to get back the old body. I needed some direction and this certainly has been the reason for my success. Thank you!
My best motivator is seeing the scales go down consistently and getting back into my smaller clothes. It is also very motivating to read others motivators.
I too am turning 50 soon and I want to be in a better state of health than I have been for years now. I live with a family of junk food junkies so I really have to keep myself focused. Things have been getting better since I have been watching your videos. Thank you so much:) My motivation is early to bed, early to rise, do my workout, follow your plan, and keep busy; if I fall off the wagon, I get right back on. It has only been 4 weeks for me and 12 of 40 pounds…gone!
One thing that has helped keep me motivated is loosing 25 pounds with Wendy’s Crack the Fat Loss Code. I’m 57 and its the first I’ve been able to loose weight in about 10 years. And believ me I’ve tried them all. I’ve reached a plateau and know that to keep going I need to exercise. I get up at 4:30am to be ready to leave the house to drive 1 1/2 hours to work. So by the time I get home at 5:45 pm I’m exhausted. Its been stressful and I haven’t been able to sleep well. The doctor has me on melatonin to help with the sleep and I’m already feeling less tired. My next thing is to start exercising. And you have been the motivation. I bought the Get Lean in 12 which is wonderful since my time is limited.Thank you so much
My number one motivation factor is my family! My soul-mate and husband, an ultra-fit soldier of 31 years is my greatest fan, and at 50+ years my metabolism decided to go into hibernation. I tried all the diets, cut calories, exercised like a mad woman, worked full-time, and raised 5 children while my hero was serving our country. In spite of this effort, today I am 40 pounds overweight. As always, I believe I must set the example and standard in our home, and I am just now learning about and adapting the eating patterns in Get Lean in 12. It is my goal and dream to become fit, and remain healthy so that my children are inspired to instill self-discipline and adapt positive changes in their lives in whatever areas they wish to improve. As for the love of my life, I want to become and remain fit and healthy so I can enjoy many more years catching up on everything we missed while he was away protecting and defending our great country and the American freedom our forefathers fought for and sacrificed for us. “De Oppresso Liber”
Zumba! Zumba! Zumba! I have been doing Zumba for a few years, but I have recently added some more classes at different gyms. It is so fun and keeps me happy and motivated. We go to our cottage on weekends and I have found classes there. Weigh myself every morning. Also I just found Vitamin Water Zero made with Stevia. I put a little in with seltzer and it is super refreshing. My summer goal is to maintain and be fit. I would love to find out how to eat on weekends and still loose??????? Keeping motivated is sticking to the plan!
Shaun & Karen,
I find that I have two very important factors I need to keep in check: consistent sleep pattern and consistent exercise pattern. And the two work together.

Thanks you guys for helping us unmotivators out!

I am an emotional eater and problems make me eat.

I keep myself around positive people. “Your stress test is remarkably improved!”
“You look like a new person”
“Your kids must be so proud of you”

I too am struggling with The “over 50 extra 10 pounds”. I am just getting started on this program so am excited to read these ideas!
Getting back into my thin clothes and feeling the fat drop off has been my motivater!! This program really works.
It helps me! Hopefully it helps you too.

Thank you!
Simply looking into the mirror is motivating. Wanting to stay healthy for my family is also a motivating factor.
[...] How Do YOU Stay Motivated For Fat Loss? [...]
Shaun,
One thing that has helped keep me motivated is loosing 25 pounds with Wendy’s Crack the Fat Loss Code. I bought the Get Lean in 12 which is wonderful since my time is limited.Thank you so much
Shaun & Karen,
My number one motivation factor is my family!
My motivation is wanting to feel healthy and strong and to look good too!
1. Having a workout buddy.
2. Trying to stay in the moment
3. Listening to your advice!!
Zumba! Zumba!
